Yonkers Raceway resumed business after completing the construction of new facilities where 1,870 slot machines are now available. Yonkers renovation aims to revive harness racing in New York by attracting punters with the slots.
The Yonkers Raceway is the first slots operation in the metropolitan area. According to plans, there will eventually be 7,500 slot machines, which will make the racetrack the largest racetrack-based slots venture in the United States.
Yonkers Raceway officials believe that about $2.6 million in profits a day will be obtained with slots. A big portion of that money will be retained by the New York State Lottery Commission, in charge of regulating slots operations at the state racetracks.
“The purse structure will bring back the better horses like we were used to in the past. We are going to be increasing the value of our stakes races dramatically. All this is going to bring back the attention and the importance of harness racing in New York, and everyone is going to see it again as the great sport that it is”, Tim Rooney, the raceway’s president said.
