On Sunday, more than 1,500 people were invited to try the provisional casino at the Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs. The event set a milestone in Pennsylvania’s gambling history since it was the first time legal slot machines were tested in the state.
“The test run smoothly, people were already hitting jackpots and the computers were working well,” Doug Habach, a spokesman for the State Gaming Control Board said. Customers were satisfied too. “I thought it was excellent,” Sheila Sheftz said. “The hospitality is great,” her husband added. They were among the lucky testers that walked away with winnings.
The opening of the slot machines hall comes two years after Pennsylvania legalized a maximum of 61,000 slot machines at 14 different venues. The other 13 gaming facilities are expected to open in the next two years.
About $70 million were spent on the 90,000-square-foot facility. A 400,000-square-foot casino and entertainment complex will be built next year.
